Working in west Buncombe
Candler and the Enka area sit fifteen minutes west of Asheville, and the housing is different from what you find in the south-side subdivisions. More acreage, more homes built between the 1960s and 1990s, more original wood siding and more houses that have taken thirty years of weather with only occasional attention.
Where projects here usually start
A meaningful share of our Candler calls begin outside rather than inside. Soft trim under a gutter, siding buried in grade, a deck ledger that was never flashed, a rim joist over a damp crawlspace. We open it, find where the water is coming in, fix that, and rebuild – and only then does the conversation move to kitchens and baths.
The other common project is space. Older homes here often have a small kitchen closed off from everything else and one bathroom for the whole house. Opening the kitchen wall and adding a second bath changes how the house lives more than any finish upgrade would.
What we do most in Candler
- Dry rot and wood repair, with the water source corrected first
- Siding replacement – fiber cement, engineered wood or vinyl
- Kitchen remodeling and wall removal
- Bathroom remodeling, including adding a second bath
- Home additions and decks – the acreage here usually allows them
- Roofing and standing seam metal, which handles debris from mature trees well
Permits, wells and septic
Permits go through Buncombe County. Two things matter more in Candler than in town: septic capacity, which limits whether you can add a bedroom at all, and well water, which affects fixture and pressure decisions in a bathroom remodel. We check both before design rather than after.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add a bedroom on septic?
Only if the system is permitted for the additional bedroom. County records show the permitted count, and we check that first - it can end an addition project before drawings start.
What does remodeling cost out here?
The same as the rest of our area. Kitchens generally $35,000 to $90,000, baths $18,000 to $45,000, siding $18,000 to $55,000. We do not add travel for Buncombe County.
My trim and siding are soft in places. Is that a big job?
Depends what is behind it. We probe, trace the water path and photograph the findings, then price a known scope with an allowance. Repairs run from about $1,500 for isolated trim to five figures when framing is involved.
Do you work on homes on well water?
Regularly. It affects fixture selection and pressure planning in bathrooms and kitchens, and we account for it in the scope.
