Vinyl has a bad reputation it partly earned
Most of the failing vinyl around Asheville was installed in the 1990s: thin panels, nailed tight so they buckled in the heat, no housewrap behind them, no flashing at the windows. Current insulated vinyl is a different product – thicker, backed with rigid foam, and available in profiles that do not read as cheap from the street.
Installed correctly it is the least expensive way to make a house weather-tight and maintenance-free. Installed the way it usually is, it traps water against the sheathing. The difference is entirely in what happens before the first panel goes up.

No. We tear off, inspect the sheathing and install a proper weather barrier. Layering over old siding is exactly how houses rot quietly.
