The tub is not earning its space
In most of the Asheville homes we work in, the hall or master tub gets used twice a year. It takes up 30 square feet, it is hard to step into, and it makes the bathroom feel smaller than it is. Converting it to a walk-in shower is one of the few remodels that improves daily life and resale at the same time – as long as the house keeps at least one tub for families with small children.
What the conversion involves
- Removal. Tub, surround and wall tile out, drain and valve exposed.
- Plumbing. The drain moves from the tub location to the shower drain position, and the valve is reset to shower height with a new mixing valve.
- Waterproofing. Membrane over the pan and walls, corners and the curb sealed, tested before tile.
- Walls. Tile, large-format porcelain panels, or a solid-surface system, depending on how much upkeep you want.
- Glass. Framed or frameless enclosure, or an open walk-in with a fixed panel and no door.
- Safety. Blocking in the walls for grab bars, a bench or a niche if the space allows.
Curbed, low-curb or curbless
A standard curb is the simplest and least expensive. A low curb of two inches is easier to step over and still straightforward. A fully curbless shower needs the pan recessed into the floor framing, which depends on how the joists run and whether we can get under them – common in a crawlspace house, harder over a finished ceiling. We tell you which of the three your house supports before you pick a look.
How long it takes
Five to eight working days for most conversions, with a mid-project break while waterproofing cures and the glass is templated. Glass usually arrives seven to ten days after templating, so the shower is usable with a curtain in the meantime if you need it.

Tile or a solid-surface system?
Tile gives you the look and endless options but has grout to maintain. Large-format porcelain or solid-surface panels have almost no grout and clean faster. We build both and will tell you the honest maintenance difference.
