Siding is a system, not a surface
Western North Carolina gets wind-driven rain off the mountains and long humid stretches in summer. Siding that is nailed up without a drainage plane behind it traps that moisture against the sheathing. What we replace most often is not failed siding – it is siding that was installed over torn housewrap with no flashing at the windows and no clearance at the ground.
So a Big Hills siding job includes what you never see: weather-resistive barrier lapped correctly, flashing at every window head and sill, kick-out flashing where a roof meets a wall, and the ground and roof clearances the manufacturer requires for the warranty to mean anything.
Materials we install
- James Hardie fiber cement. The most common choice here. Handles moisture and sun, holds paint, does not feed woodpeckers or carpenter bees. Available prefinished or field painted.
- Engineered wood (LP SmartSide). Lighter and quicker to install than fiber cement, real wood texture, good option on larger elevations and on gables.
- Vinyl. Lowest cost and no repainting. Right choice on rentals and budget-driven projects, and modern insulated profiles are far better than what most people picture.
- Cedar and specialty. Shake accents, board and batten, mixed-material elevations where the design calls for it.
Dry rot and what is behind the wall
We do not know the condition of the sheathing until siding comes off. On houses built before 2000 we usually find some rot at the bottom course, around windows or where a deck ledger was attached. Our estimates carry a stated allowance for sheathing replacement so it is not a surprise line item, and we photograph and price anything beyond it before we cover it up.
