Bathrooms that hold up, not just photograph well
Bathrooms are the most failure-prone room in a house. Water gets behind tile, a pan is sloped wrong, an exhaust fan vents into the attic instead of outside, and five years later somebody is tearing out a wall. We build bathrooms the way we build them in our new homes in Western North Carolina: waterproof membrane over the whole wet area, sloped pans that actually drain, and ventilation that leaves the building.
Big Hills has been building in the mountains since 2018. That means we have opened plenty of Asheville bathrooms from the 1950s through the 1990s and know what tends to be hiding – cast iron drains at the end of their life, undersized supply lines, joists notched by whoever came before us.

- Layout changes. Moving the toilet, stealing a few feet from a closet, combining two cramped baths into one that works.
- Vanities and storage. Single or double, stock or custom-built, with the outlets and lighting the code now requires.
- Accessible bathrooms. Curbless entries, blocking for grab bars, comfort-height fixtures, wider doors for aging in place.
- Ventilation and moisture control. Correctly sized fan, ducted outside, on a timer or humidity sensor.
Where bathrooms go wrong
Three things account for most of the failed bathrooms we tear out. First, waterproofing stopped at the shower and skipped the curb and bench. Second, the pan was built with a slope that pooled water at the wall. Third, the fan was either too small for the room or vented into the attic, so the moisture stayed in the house. All three are cheap to do right during the build and expensive to fix later, so they are not places we cut.
Timeline and budget
A hall bath refresh that keeps the layout usually takes two to three weeks. A full master bath with a relocated shower and new plumbing rough-in runs four to six weeks. Tile selection and vanity lead time set the start date more often than our schedule does.
