Three things to check before you buy one
Walk-in tubs are sold hard and installed carelessly. Before we quote one, we check three things. Drain size and fall – a walk-in tub must empty before you can open the door, and a slow 1.5-inch drain makes that a cold five minutes. Hot water capacity – a 40-gallon tank will not fill a 50-gallon tub at a comfortable temperature. And floor framing – a filled tub with a bather is a serious point load in a bathroom that may sit over a crawlspace.
If any of the three is wrong, we tell you what it costs to fix, or we tell you a curbless shower with a bench would serve you better. Sometimes it would.

Frequently asked questions
What does a walk-in tub cost installed?
Typically $9,000 to $20,000 including installation. Air or hydro jets, a heated seat and any needed plumbing or water heater upgrade drive the range.
Do I need a bigger water heater?
Often, yes. Walk-in tubs hold more water than a standard tub and you sit in it while it fills. A 40-gallon tank usually is not enough - we check and tell you before you order.
How long does it take to drain?
With an upsized drain and a fast-drain model, about two to three minutes. On an undersized existing drain it can be twice that, sitting in cooling water. This is the most common complaint and it is an installation issue, not a product issue.
Would a curbless shower be better for me?
For many people, yes - easier entry, no waiting to fill or drain, and less expensive. We will say so if that is what fits your situation.
