Why metal makes sense in the mountains
Steep pitches, heavy summer rain, leaf and needle debris, and the occasional real snow load. Standing seam handles all four better than asphalt: nothing to lose granules, panels shed debris instead of catching it, and the concealed fastener system has no exposed screws or washers to fail in fifteen years.
The trade-off is cost – typically two to three times shingle – and the fact that installation quality matters more. A poorly detailed metal roof leaks at the same places a shingle roof does, but is far more expensive to open up.
What we install
- Standing seam, concealed fastener. Snap-lock or mechanically seamed depending on pitch, with clips that allow thermal movement.
- Exposed fastener panels. Lower cost, right for outbuildings, barns and some accent roofs.
- Metal shingles and shakes. Where a traditional appearance is required.
- Snow retention. Snow guards above entries, walkways and over lower roofs – important on the pitches we build here.
- Full flashing package. Valleys, chimneys, skylights, roof-to-wall with kick-outs, and pipe boots rated for metal.
What goes underneath
High-temperature synthetic underlayment across the field and ice-and-water membrane at eaves, valleys and penetrations. Metal moves and gets hot; standard underlayment degrades under it. Ventilation gets balanced at the same time, because a metal roof over an under-ventilated attic still produces condensation.
