Trim fails before siding does

Trim takes the weather at every edge and end grain – fascia under a dripping gutter, rake boards on a wind-driven elevation, casings under a window with no sill pan. On the older Asheville homes we work on, the siding is often still serviceable while every horizontal trim board has gone soft.

Replacing trim in the same paint-grade pine restarts the same clock. We usually put back PVC, fiber cement or engineered wood, all of which handle the exposure that killed the original.

What we replace

  • Fascia and soffit, including vented soffit where attic intake is short
  • Corner boards, frieze and rake boards
  • Window and door casings, with sill pans added where none existed
  • Porch columns, beams and skirt boards
  • Water table and band boards at the base of the wall

Materials

PVC never rots, holds paint well and is the right answer for fascia and anything close to grade or water. Fiber cement trim matches Hardie siding and stays dimensionally stable. Engineered wood trim costs less and looks like wood where that matters. We mix them – PVC where water hits, wood-look products where the eye lands.

While we are up there

Fascia replacement is the right moment to correct gutter slope, add drip edge where it is missing, and improve soffit ventilation. Those three things together often solve the ice and moisture problem that rotted the fascia in the first place.

We work in Asheville, Hendersonville, Arden, Candler, Fletcher, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Mills River, Brevard and Waynesville.

Frequently asked questions

What does exterior trim replacement cost?

Typically $3,500 to $18,000 depending on how much of the house is involved, the number of stories and material. Fascia and soffit on a two-story with complex rooflines is the expensive case.

PVC or wood?

PVC anywhere water sits or splashes - fascia, water table, column bases. Wood-look products where appearance matters and exposure is moderate. Mixing them is normal and sensible.

Can you match the existing profile?

In most cases yes, with stock profiles or milled to match. Where an exact match is not available we tell you before the order, not after installation.

Should the gutters come off?

For fascia work, yes - and it is the right time to correct slope and add drip edge. We rehang them as part of the job.
